On every phone
Everyone reads in the language they chose.
People open a link on their own phone, choose a language and read along as the speaker talks. There is nothing to install, no account to create and no sign-up before they can see the captions.
Joining from a seat in the room
Put the listening link in the event information, or display a QR code where people can see it. It can also go in a printed programme or an order of service. Someone scans the code or opens the link, and the viewer opens in the browser they already use.
They choose a language from the list. As the speaker talks, translated words arrive on their screen while they stay in their seat. The person beside them can choose a different language; nobody has to agree on one translation for the whole room.
Someone arriving after the event has started uses the same link and chooses their language. Keep the joining instructions visible for them. There is no receiver to find at the door, and no device to return when they leave.
What you do not need
Four things people expect to have to do, and do not.
-
No app to install
It runs in the browser. The audience does not need to visit an app store before the event or download anything when they arrive.
-
No device to set up for each person
You start the session; people open it on the phone in their pocket. You are not pairing a receiver with each listener or preparing a device per seat.
-
No shared reading language
Choosing the spoken language does not set everyone’s captions to it. Each person chooses what they read, independently of the people around them.
-
No equipment collection afterwards
The phone belongs to the person using it. There are no translation receivers to count back in, clean, or charge for the next event.
In the same room
The same sentence, whichever language they picked
The person beside them can choose something else. Nobody has to agree on one translation for the whole room.

Spoken audio as well as reading
Some people would rather listen than keep their eyes on a screen. Where spoken translation is switched on for the venue, they use the same link to listen on their phone through their own earphones. Tell people to bring a pair if they plan to use it.
A person listening in the room needs something in their ears. Playing the translation through the phone’s speaker means hearing the room and the translated voice at once, and adds sound for everyone nearby. Reading captions needs no earphones; listening to translated audio in a shared room does. The phones as receivers guide covers setting it up and what to tell listeners.
