The words we use

Organisation, venue, event, operator, moderator, streamer — what each one means here.

SpanVoice uses a small set of words the same way everywhere: in the portal, in the desk app, on the audience pages and in these guides. This page is the list.

Places and things you run

Organisation. Your account. It holds your venues, your team, your card and your invoices. One person can belong to more than one organisation and switch between them.

Venue. One place that streams: one room, one event at a time. A venue has its own permanent links, its own settings and its own record of what it has used. Most organisations have one; add another for each building you run events in.

Event or gathering. Whatever you run in the venue: a meeting, a lecture, a conference session, a briefing. In the portal an event’s record is called a session.

Kind of room. A venue setting: General, Worship, Business or Education. It shapes the words the translation reaches for. See Kinds of room.

People

Operator. Whoever is at the desk running the event: the person who presses start and stop. They use the desk app or the browser streaming page.

Owner. Runs the organisation. Everything: every venue, the team, the card and the invoices.

Administrator. Runs venues: every setting, every key, the glossary, and that venue’s own people. Never the money, and cannot change who is on the account. An administrator reaches every venue, or only the ones chosen for them.

Billing contact. Invoices, usage figures and the card. Nothing else at all.

Venue administrator. An administrator attached to particular venues rather than all of them.

Moderator. Someone trusted in the room who can open the moderator page: change what the room is speaking, pause, watch the translation, fix a word mid-event. Nothing else.

Streamer. Someone who may send the room’s sound from a browser for a venue. Nothing else.

The audience, readers and listeners. The people following along on their phones. They need no account and are never counted or charged for individually.

See Roles and what each one can do.

The pages

Reading page (also the viewer). The page on a phone where each person picks a language and reads, or listens.

Projector page. The full-screen page for the room’s display. Shows one shared language.

Caption overlay. The transparent page you add to your streaming software so captions sit over your video. Shows one shared language.

Moderator page. The signed-in page for moderators.

Browser streaming page. The signed-in page that sends sound from a browser instead of the desk app.

Portal (also the admin). Where you sign in to manage your organisation, venues, team and billing.

Things you set

Streaming key. The one thing the desk app needs. It links the app to a venue. Found on the venue’s App tab.

Usually spoken here. The venue’s starting spoken language. The audience reads. The language a reader sees before choosing their own. Quick picks. Up to 8 languages shown as buttons to the operator and moderator for switching mid-event.

Glossary. Two lists per venue: Names to listen for, the words it should always hear right, and Wording, the exact wording you want for particular words in a particular language pair.

Spoken translation. The translation read aloud, which a venue can make available and which each listener switches on for themselves.

Credit. The prepaid balance that usage is drawn from. Automatic top-up keeps it funded from your card.
